Department of Asia-Pacific Social & Cultural Studies
The Department of Social & Cultural Studies (DSCS), NIIS, CASS, mainly highlights the studies of social and cultural elements in the international politics of the Asia-Pacific, as well as the fundamental studies of society and culture in this region. The DSCS has made academic connections with quite a number of its counterparts in Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, South Asia and the rest of the world.
With a history of more than 30 years, the DSCS has obtained many academic achievements in the field of South Asian studies, Southeast Asian Studies and Northeast Asian Studies. The DSCS also emphasizes on interdisciplinary and comprehensive studies. Moreover, the research staff have so far published numerous books, research papers and translation works. The best works published in recent years, to name just a few, include The Asian Extremists, The Contemporary Islam in Southeast Asia, The Contemporary Neighboring Countries View of China, The Observation of the Indian Society, On Tagore's Early Poetry Creation, On Shriiherukaabhidhaanatantra and Shriicakrasamvaravivrti(Sanskrit manuscripts)——a Romanized text, its collation, comments and a Chinese version, The Korean’s Image to the Chinese People, An Analysis of Multilevel Governance of Water Resources in the Lancang-Mekong River Basin, and etc.
At present, the DSCS has 4 research staff, including 1 senior research fellow, 1 associate research fellow, and 2 assistant research fellows, all of whom hold the doctor's degrees. They are proficient in the English, Indonesian, Malay, Korean and Japanese language. Welcome the scholars from home and abroad to join our team and build the world-class discipline together.
