Department of Great Power Relations Studies

Department of Great Power Relations Studies was established as a part of National Institute of International Strategy in 2012. The main aim of this department is to explore theory and policy on great power strategy, especially related to China’s rise. The three largest economies in contemporary world, United States, China and Japan, traditional great power Russia and emerging power India, all have strong strategic interests in the Asia-Pacific region. As a result, the Asia-Pacific region is considered as strategic support belt for China’s rise and starting point for building new type of great power relations. This department tries to explore the new road for great power’s rise based on the Asia-Pacific region from a global view. Recently, the department expects to focus on China-U.S.-Japan relations and examine strategic issues among three countries. In general, this department tries to deepen our theoretical understanding on new type of great power relations and to provide policy advice to Chinese government.
