Abstract: Research on international Reciprocity is critical for China, as Chinese traditional culture places much importance on relational networks based on Reciprocity. Such cultural traditions are reflected in international relations, and are the conceptual basis for the principles of mutual benefit and a harmonious world. To the disappointment of many though, China has yet to initiate research on Reciprocity in international relations. In the West, Reciprocity has already become a theoretical concept in international relations theory, and while only a modest number of studies have been conducted, they have profound implications. In order to construct a Chinese theory of international Reciprocity, two tasks must be completed: (1) a study of the Chinese people and traditional Chinese culture must be integrated; (2) An appraisal of Western research is needed. This article fills the second of these two needs, systematically introducing available Western literature on this topic, pointing out its strengths and discussing some of its limitations. These limitations can set a direction for future research on international Reciprocity in China.
