Abstract: Australia is a middle tier power which has a very unique position within the Asia Pacific Region. Over the past several years, China and Australia have developed mutual cooperation at a very rapid pace, with economic relations between the two states developing particularly quickly. With the progression of China’s peaceful rise though, SinoAustralian relations have gone through a series of twists and turns. Taking the state of Sino-Australian relations as its starting point, this article analyzes the views of Australian academics and the response of the Australian media and public to China’s rise, as well as the policy of the Australian government towards China. Incorporating an analysis of all three of these factors, this article offers a comprehensive consideration of Australian views of and responses to China’s rise.
