Abstract: This essay offers an overview of one of the most important topics in the study of International norms the domestic ratification of an international norm. The article first introduces the history of academic research on international norms and the background against which research on the domestication of international norms began. Second, the essay discusses the most important intervening factors in the process of the domestic ratification of an international norm. These include domestic institutions, including type of political system, domestic interests and the suitability of the norm. Finally, the essay discusses the mechanisms through which an international norm is spread domestically, including a discussion of role and impact of incentive mechanisms and socialization mechanisms in transmitting the norm. This includes the shifting relationship between consequential logic and appropriate logic.
