On the Economic Effects of Preferential Rules of Origin within the Free Trade Agreements in East Asia

  Abstract: This article analyzes the present development of the Free Trade Agreements(FTAs) in East Asia and the reasons for its rapid growth, while further analyzing the FTAs preferential rules of origin, which it argues to have four key characteristics. The article computes a restrictions index for the preferential rules of origin of the FTAs in East Asia, and on the basis of this, uses statistical analysis to discuss the empirical effects of preferential rules of origin on the East Asian economy. In closing the article suggests policy measures for promoting regional economic cooperation in East Asia.
