Abstract: Building new type of great power relations is critical for clarifying the interrelationship between the United States and China and determining the long term direction of the relationship. New type of great power relations refers to a bilateral relationship that emerges within the process of power transition in the international system that is characterized by a certain level of strategic competition, but which also develops with adequate stability to permit states to engage in a certain range of cooperative activities. Whether China and the US can develop new type of great power relations depends largely on the speed and means of power transition between the two countries, on dynamics related to their mutual perceptions towards one another, on the force that the two powers put behind their bilateral policies, and on the struggle at strategic and material interests level surrounding the building of new type of great power relationship. New type of great power relations cannot simply be built over night, but require long term and sustained efforts.
