Abstract: Not only will the American strategy of promoting TPP as part of its pivot to Asia fail to replace existing mechanisms driving regional integration, it will actually stimulate new developments towards the strengthening and institutionalization of East Asian regional cooperation. TPP underscores the regional security issues and geo-political conflict created by America’s strategic pivot towards Asia.It has caused fractures within ASEAN and complicated East Asia’s regional security relations. It has also transformed America’s role within East Asia from one of an offshore power providing a regional balance to one of regional leader. The effects that TPP has in terms of stimulating regional integration in East Asia, in terms of changing the geo-political status quo and in terms of re-making America’s regional role serve to further aggravate the regional disequilibrium introduced by America’s pivot towards Asia.
