Abstract: During the British colonial period, Indian laws were in the process of amalgamation, conflict and compromise between British law and traditional Hindu law as well as local conventions. The short story So That’s How It Is by Tagore portrayed vividly the complex crisis in the course of transplantation of British law into the Hindu society. Under the new land law, many peasants and lower caste members were faced with heavy pressure in life. Through portraying two generations of Brahmanic landholders in a family with literary techniques such as unreliable narration and symbolic scene depiction, Tagore expressed his worry and thinking about the innovation of Indian laws.
