The Motif of One Becoming More and Buddhist Scriptures

Abstract: One becoming more was a motif and a technique frequently resorted to in ancient Chinese fiction, in the novels written during the Ming and Qing Dynasties such as in the Journey to the West in particular. The motif had its origin in Buddhist scriptures. This paper first traces various interesting demonstration of the motif in ancient Chinese literature, and then makes positive analysis of its connections with different Buddhist scriptures and other Indian literature such the two great Sanskrit epics as well, and finally this author elucidates the philosophic ground and aesthetic value of the motif.
