ABSTRACT: As the 2014 deadline for withdrawal of American military forces from Afghanistan draws near, the issue of Afghanistan’s re-construction has come to the forefront once again. Against the background of the country’s third post-war Presidential election, which will be held in 2014, the country’s changing political context raises key concerns. While progress achieved vis-à-vis reconstruction over the past decade has helped lay a positive foundation for Afghanistan’s political environment, growing conflict within the incumbent government presents a major challenge. At the same time, addressing the issue of the “rebel forces” is key for Afghanistan’s realization of reconciliation and peace in the future.
