ABSTRACT: When considered in historical perspective, the 20th century witnessed little progress in Japan-India relations, while the early years of the 21st century have evidenced dramatic steps forward. In just a few years, the two states have established stable political, economic, security and military cooperation. While the rapid progress in their relations can be explained both by their economic interdependence and by their shared concerns regarding geo-political developments in the Asia Pacific Region, the role of the United States in encouraging the relationship should not be overlooked. When viewed within the current geo-political context, it is inevitable that the rapid development of a strategic global partnership between India and Japan will have profound implications. In particular, it already presents challenges vis-à-vis Chinese border security which must be carefully considered.
