ABSTRACT: When the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was founded, India was indifferent to it. In the initial years India took seriously the bilateral relations with ASEAN countries, but didn’t give enough attention to ASEAN. Along with the change of international situation and the improvement of ASEAN’s integration level, India began to attach importance to economic cooperation with ASEAN. Restricted by the Cold War and India’s relations with great powers, India’s ASEAN policy didn’t achieve the anticipated effect. Research on the evolution of India’s policy to ASEAN will help to understand the current India-ASEAN relations.
