The Threat of Maritime Piracy in the Indian Ocean and China’s Indian Ocean Strategy

ABSTRACT:The Indian Ocean is facing the threat of maritime piracy at its eastern and western waters: the Strait of Malacca to the east, and the Somali coast and the Gulf of Aden to the west. The paper compares maritime piracy in the eastern and western waters of the Indian Ocean, examines the dilemmas in international anti-piracy cooperation, reviews the Chinese responses to piracy in Indian Ocean, and finally discusses its implications for China’s Indian Ocean Strategy.
