Strengthening“Empathy”between the two great civilizations of China and India

　　ABSTRACT: The English word“empathy”is synonymous to the traditional Chinese virtue of shu. Rabindranath Tagore was the supreme epitome of empathy. Jawaharlal Nehru’s The Discovery of India and Nandan Nilekani’s new book, Imagining India: The Idea of a Renewed Nation, use China as a reference while discussing India , which are also manifestations of India-China empathy. The latter contains a profound discourse on the theory of“population bonus”. It, however, understands China rather shallowly, even with misconceptions. During the development of China and India,“Empathy” should be enhanced, and the two countries should learn from each other.
