ABSTRACT: This paper presents an introduction of school education stages (primary and upper primary education), its financing and governance in India. It also evaluates the performance of India’s elementary education system through the examination of infrastructure, teachers, enrolment and education quality. Due to India’s linguistic and religious diversity, caste system and economic disparity, improvement of its elementary education is limited, slow and varies geographically. The future development in India’s elementary education relies on efforts from both the government and local communities.
