ABSTRACT: Historically, Afghanistan has maintained close ties with South Asia, with the former being critical for the regional security of the latter. Since Afghanistan’s re-construction, the expansion of Indian and Pakistani influence into the country, counterterrorism, national reconciliation, and regional cooperation crossing over into Afghanistan have increased and interacted intensely with one another. For this reason, the conflict between India and Pakistan has become intertwined with Afghani affairs, and has had an even greater impact on South Asian regional security. If India and Pakistan can cooperate in Afghanistan all can benefit; if they compete both will be harmed. Improved relations between India and Pakistan will have a positive effect on regional security and cooperation and on re-construction in Afghanistan.
