ABSTRACT: Rabindranath Tagore was a representative writer of the Oriental culture in the early 20th century; Zhou Zuoren was one of the famous writers in modern China. In the modern cultural history of China and India, Tagore and Zhou Zuoren were spiritually connected for a short period of time for some reasons. Firstly, in the New Culture Movement, Tagore became one target which Zhou Zuoren used to criticize Chinese feudalism. Secondly, before and after Tagore's visit to China in 1924, Zhou Zuoren, due to his ideological complexity, his attitude to Tagore also became complicated and changeable. To explore Zhou Zuoren’s misreading of Tagore and his complicated view on Tagore, it is not only beneficial to our understanding of the complex relationship between Tagore and some modern Chinese intellectuals, but also helpful for us to understand Zhou Zuoren’s ideological complexity and some of its features and causes.
