ABSTRACT: As a means of realizing its dream of becoming a great power, enhancing its influence in Southeast Asia, speeding the pace of implementation of its “look east” policy, and furthering its economic interests, India has become proactively involved in the South China Seas. India has increased military cooperation with states asserting claims to the South China Seas, and despite Chinese opposition, has begun joint development of oil and gas in the South China Seas with Vietnam. At the same time, it has colluded with the United States, Japan and Australia in sensationalizing the dispute over the South China Seas. India’s interference in the dispute over the South China Seas can only result in further complicating the problem, and plays in to efforts of some states to internationalize the issue. It will also result in damage to the normal development of Sino-Indian relations.
